Rescuers Search For Eight Missing Near Anak Krakatau After Volcanic Eruption

Indonesian search and rescue teams are looking for eight people who went missing at sea while travelling towards Anak Krakatau, an active volcanic island in the Sunda Strait. The group was aboard a speedboat that departed from Carita in Banten province as they headed towards the volcano to report on an eruption. Officials said contact with the boat was lost during the journey, prompting a search operation in the surrounding waters.

The missing group includes five photojournalists, two crew members and a route guide. Al Amrad, chief of Banten’s Search and Rescue Office, said the boat had been travelling from the coastal town of Carita towards Anak Krakatau, which lies between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra. Rescue authorities began efforts to locate the vessel after communication was lost.

The search comes as volcanic activity around Anak Krakatau has raised concerns for people operating near the island. The journalists had been travelling to document and report on the eruption when the boat disappeared from contact. Rescue personnel have been deployed to search the waters and establish what happened to the vessel and those on board.

Authorities are also taking measures to limit public exposure to volcanic ash in affected areas. The government has authorised schools in regions experiencing ashfall to temporarily shift to online learning. The move is intended to reduce students’ exposure to ash while volcanic conditions remain a concern.

Anak Krakatau is located in the Sunda Strait, a busy stretch of water separating Java and Sumatra. The volcano is the remnant of the catastrophic Krakatau volcanic system and has remained active in recent years. Its location means eruptions can affect surrounding coastal communities and create hazardous conditions for boats operating close to the island.

Search and rescue officials were continuing efforts to locate the missing people and determine the condition of the speedboat. The operation is being conducted as authorities monitor the volcanic situation and its impact on nearby areas. The disappearance of the journalists and other passengers has added urgency to the rescue effort as teams search the waters around Anak Krakatau.
