Reports Claim Civilian Casualties in Balochistan’s Barkhan Amid Shelling Allegations
Civilian casualties reported in Barkhan amid shelling allegations
Civilian casualties have been reported in Balochistan's Barkhan district following alleged indiscriminate shelling and air strikes by Pakistani security forces, with rights groups condemning the actions as collective punishment. At least 12 unarmed Baloch civilians, including women and children as young as two, were killed on April 12-14, 2026, after freedom fighters reportedly launched ground operations targeting military personnel involved in alleged war crimes. Three others sustained serious injuries, with one passenger vehicle reportedly set ablaze post-strike, preventing rescue efforts.
The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) identified victims including Ali (40), Beebel (30), Mir Jan (2), Somri (35), Balach (70), Shari (22), Rahman (18), Naikho (17), Allah Bakhsh (6), Sado (13), Hapo (8), and Mahrang (2), alongside injured individuals like Zar Bibi (55), Hazar Khan (9), and Isra (15). The group described the bombardment as a disproportionate response enveloping populated areas, violating constitutional and international norms. Pakistani forces cordoned off the region amid escalating military operations.
These deaths stem from Baloch militants setting up checkpoints to search Army, Frontier Corps, and intelligence personnel on April 12, prompting retaliatory air strikes. Activists highlight a pattern of area-wide targeting after single incidents, fueling hatred and mistrust in the insurgency-plagued province. Barkhan, a remote district, has seen prior violence, including bus passenger killings and triple murders linked to tribal tensions.

The incident intensifies Balochistan's long-running separatist conflict, where groups demand independence citing resource exploitation and human rights abuses. BYC warned that such tactics exacerbate deprivation and resistance, echoing global concerns over civilian targeting in counterinsurgency.
No official Pakistani statement has confirmed the toll or addressed allegations, though military operations continue in nearby Mach and Bolan areas. Rights monitors urge independent probes into potential war crimes. International attention grows as social media amplifies claims of systematic repression against Baloch populations. The episode underscores volatility in Pakistan's southwestern frontier amid broader security challenges.
