Report Says Russia Fired 8,150 Drones At Ukraine During May Offensive

Report claims Russia launched record 8,150 drones at Ukraine in May escalation.

Russia launched a record number of long-range drones against Ukraine in May, marking a sharp escalation in aerial attacks as the ongoing war intensified and Kyiv renewed urgent appeals for Western air defence support, according to an AFP analysis of Ukrainian air force data.

Ukrainian military figures show that Russia fired 8,150 long-range drones during the month, a 24% increase compared to April, making it the highest monthly total recorded since the start of the conflict. The data indicates a sustained expansion in Moscow’s drone warfare capabilities.

In addition to drones, Russia reportedly launched 211 missiles in May, also among the highest monthly figures recorded. The increased missile and drone strikes coincided with renewed Ukrainian calls for additional US assistance, particularly for Patriot air defence systems, which Kyiv says are critical for intercepting high-speed incoming threats.

Despite the intensity of the attacks, Ukrainian air defence systems intercepted around 91% of incoming drones and missiles, highlighting the effectiveness of its layered defence network. However, officials have warned that missile interception remains heavily dependent on continued Western military supplies.

The escalation comes after a brief three-day truce last month, which raised hopes for renewed diplomatic engagement but was quickly followed by mutual accusations of violations and intensified long-range strikes by both sides.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly urged allies, including the United States, to accelerate the delivery of air defence ammunition, warning that shortages could weaken the country’s ability to withstand future missile barrages as the war shows no immediate signs of resolution.
