Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei may hold his first international contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a report by Russia’s state-run TASS news agency. An Iranian source cited by the agency said that a phone conversation or meeting with Putin could be among Khamenei’s first engagements with a foreign leader.
The source described Russia as a close partner of Iran and said relations between the two countries could lead to an early interaction between the two leaders. However, the source added that Khamenei has not appeared publicly due to security concerns linked to the ongoing military situation.
Mojtaba Khamenei was selected as Iran’s new Supreme Leader in March following the reported death of his father, Ali Khamenei. Since taking the position, he has pledged to continue Iran’s response to the killing of his predecessor, stating that revenge would be pursued against those responsible.

According to the TASS report, Khamenei is expected to remain away from public appearances until the security situation stabilises. The Iranian source said the government would wait for conditions to return to normal before arranging his public engagements.
Russia has maintained close political and strategic ties with Iran, and Russian officials have said that communication channels between the two countries remain active. Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov recently stated that Moscow continues discussions with Iranian representatives despite rising tensions in the region.
The reported possibility of an early conversation between Khamenei and Putin comes amid continuing geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel. Developments surrounding Iran’s leadership and foreign relations are being closely watched as regional security concerns continue to evolve.
