Rajaji National Park To Get All-Weather Road; Commercial Vehicles Not Allowed

Authorities clear an all-weather road through Rajaji National Park, restricting commercial vehicles to limit environmental disruption.

The Uttarakhand government has cleared the development of an all-weather road passing through Rajaji National Park, aiming to improve year-round connectivity in the region. Authorities, however, have stated that commercial vehicles will not be permitted to ply on the stretch in order to minimize environmental impact.

Officials said the project is designed to ensure uninterrupted travel during monsoon and winter months, when landslides and adverse weather often disrupt traffic. The proposed road is expected to benefit local residents, tourists, and essential service providers by providing a safer and more reliable route.

Environmental safeguards have been incorporated into the project plan, including restrictions on heavy and commercial vehicles. Forest department authorities indicated that limiting traffic volume is intended to reduce noise, pollution, and disturbance to wildlife within the protected area. Rajaji National Park is known for its rich biodiversity, including elephants, tigers, and several bird species.

Conservation groups have expressed concerns about infrastructure development inside protected forests, warning that road expansion can fragment habitats and increase human-wildlife conflict. In response, state officials have said mitigation measures such as designated wildlife crossings, speed restrictions, and monitoring mechanisms will be implemented.

The project underscores the ongoing challenge of balancing infrastructure development with ecological preservation. While improved connectivity is seen as vital for regional growth and tourism, environmentalists stress that strict enforcement of traffic restrictions and conservation norms will be critical to safeguarding the park’s fragile ecosystem.
