Rahul Gandhi’s Parliament Remarks Against RSS, Amit Shah Trigger Centre’s Anger

A heated exchange broke out in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday after Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi criticised the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and accused the government of failing to address concerns over paper leaks and student protests. His remarks triggered strong objections from treasury bench members, leading to a political confrontation inside the House. Gandhi was speaking during a discussion on the new legislation aimed at preventing paper leaks and unfair practices in public examinations. During his speech, he spoke about his interactions with students and drew a distinction between those who remain open to learning and those who believe they already possess complete knowledge.

While making his point, Gandhi used a term that was objected to by members of the ruling alliance, who described it as unparliamentary. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju immediately intervened and demanded that Gandhi refrain from using the expression. Several NDA MPs joined the protest, leading to disruptions in the House. Responding to the objections, Gandhi said that he was not directing the remark at any particular member of Parliament. He maintained that his comments were aimed at explaining a broader point about attitudes towards learning and knowledge. However, members of the treasury benches continued to raise objections and demanded that the remark be withdrawn.

During his address, Gandhi also targeted the RSS, accusing the organisation of damaging India’s education system. He alleged that institutions responsible for shaping education and knowledge systems had been affected by ideological interference and claimed that students were facing difficulties due to failures in the examination system. Gandhi also criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the handling of protests by students demanding action against paper leaks. He questioned the government’s response to student concerns and alleged that those raising their voices were facing pressure instead of receiving solutions.

The remarks came during a debate on the government’s proposed measures to strengthen the examination system and prevent leaks of question papers. The issue has become politically sensitive following several allegations of irregularities in competitive examinations, with opposition parties demanding stronger accountability mechanisms. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised Gandhi’s speech and demanded an apology for his language and allegations against the government. NDA leaders argued that parliamentary debates should maintain decorum and accused the opposition leader of making politically motivated statements.

The latest confrontation adds to the ongoing political tensions between the government and opposition parties in Parliament. Discussions over examination reforms, paper leaks, and accountability have become major points of debate, particularly as student groups continue to raise concerns about the fairness of recruitment and entrance examinations. The Lok Sabha proceedings witnessed repeated interruptions as both sides stood by their positions. While the opposition highlighted concerns over education and examination integrity, the government defended its measures and objected to what it described as inappropriate remarks made during the debate.
