Putin At SPIEF Defends India's Right To Choose Defence Partners Independently
Russian President Vladimir Putin has strongly defended India’s strategic autonomy, stating that any attempt to pressure the country through sanctions would fail under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Putin emphasized that India has consistently pursued policies based on its own national interests and would continue to do so despite external pressures regarding its relationship with Russia.
Addressing concerns over potential sanctions linked to India's defense cooperation with Moscow, Putin said India remains a sovereign nation with the right to independently decide its economic and military partnerships. He noted that New Delhi has always acted according to what it considers best for its national security and development, regardless of criticism or pressure from other countries.
Putin specifically referred to the possibility of sanctions related to India's acquisition of advanced Russian defense systems, including the Su-57 fighter aircraft and the S-500 air defense platform. According to him, India's decisions on defense procurement are driven by operational requirements, technological suitability, and value rather than geopolitical considerations or external influence.

The Russian leader further stressed that Moscow's relationship with India remains stable and is not dependent on changing global political circumstances. He said Russia does not allow outside forces to dictate its defense exports and reaffirmed that agreements reached with India would continue to be honored. Putin described India as one of Russia's most important partners and reiterated Moscow's commitment to fulfilling all obligations toward New Delhi.
Speaking about the Su-57 fighter jet program, Putin revealed that Russia had previously proposed a joint development initiative with India. While the project did not materialize as originally planned, Russia proceeded independently with the aircraft's development. He described the Su-57 as one of the most advanced fighter aircraft currently available and indicated that Russia remains willing to offer it to India.
The remarks come at a time when global geopolitical tensions continue to shape international defense and trade relationships. Putin's statements underscore Russia's intention to maintain close strategic ties with India while also highlighting New Delhi's longstanding policy of strategic independence. The comments are expected to draw attention amid ongoing debates over defense partnerships, sanctions policies, and the evolving balance of power in international relations.
