Pune–Shirdi Direct Train To Be Flagged Off On June 17 By Union Minister for Railways

Direct Pune–Shirdi train enhances pilgrimage and regional travel access.

A new direct rail link between Pune and Sainagar Shirdi is set to be inaugurated on June 17, marking a significant boost to regional connectivity and religious tourism in Maharashtra. The Pune–Sainagar Shirdi Express will be flagged off from Pune Railway Station by Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw in the presence of other dignitaries. The service is expected to operate daily and is aimed at improving travel convenience for pilgrims, families, and senior citizens visiting one of India’s most prominent spiritual destinations.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Railways, the new train will be the first direct service connecting Pune with Sainagar Shirdi, eliminating the need for multiple transfers for passengers travelling between the two cities. Pune, often referred to as the “Oxford of the East,” is a major educational, industrial, and information technology hub in Maharashtra, with several universities, research institutions, and manufacturing centres contributing to its rapid urban growth.

Sainagar Shirdi, located in Ahilyanagar district, is widely regarded as one of India’s most important pilgrimage sites due to the shrine of Shri Sai Baba. The railway ministry noted that the station serves millions of devotees every year, and the introduction of a direct train from Pune is expected to significantly ease travel for pilgrims. Officials also highlighted that the service will support religious tourism and improve accessibility to the temple town, particularly for elderly passengers and group travellers.

The proposed route will connect several key towns along the way, including Shrigonda, Ahilyanagar, and Rahuri, each of which plays an important role in the region’s economic and social landscape. These stops are expected to benefit farmers, students, traders, and working professionals by providing faster and more affordable travel options. The inclusion of such towns is also expected to strengthen local commerce and improve access to Pune’s healthcare and educational facilities.

The Railways further stated that the new service will contribute to regional development by boosting tourism and supporting local businesses in and around Shirdi. Increased passenger movement is expected to benefit hotels, transport operators, and small vendors dependent on pilgrimage-related tourism. The government views the initiative as part of its broader effort to expand rail connectivity and improve infrastructure across key cultural and economic corridors in Maharashtra.

Officials emphasized that the introduction of the Pune–Shirdi Express will enhance passenger convenience while strengthening economic linkages across the region. By providing a direct and reliable travel option, the service is expected to reduce journey times and improve overall accessibility. The Ministry of Railways reiterated that the project aligns with its objective of expanding efficient, affordable, and inclusive rail connectivity across India.
