Promised Dinner But Never Returned: Indian Man Dies in New Zealand Crash

Papamoa in New Zealand was struck by tragedy when 36-year-old Indian-origin man Ramandeep Dhillon died in a two-vehicle crash while driving for Uber on Te Puke Highway between Bell Road and Poplar Lane. The incident occurred around 7:15 pm on Wednesday evening, leaving his wife Veerpal Kaur and their 18-month-old daughter Kudrat devastated. Dhillon, originally from Punjab, had moved to New Zealand on a student visa in 2015. He returned to India in 2024 to marry Kaur before the couple settled together in Papamoa, where both initially worked on kiwifruit orchards. Police reported that two people from the other vehicle sustained injuries in the crash.

Dhillon had recently taken up Uber driving to gain flexibility in caring for his young daughter. On the day of the accident, he spent time with Kudrat before leaving for work and promised his wife that he would return home for dinner. When he stopped answering calls, concern grew within the family. Later that night, police arrived at their home to deliver the heartbreaking news of his death at the scene. Kaur described the profound shock and grief, stating that she felt her life had been ruined and recalling her husband as a loving, loyal, and thoughtful partner.

The couple had met through family connections at a party and developed a friendship before Dhillon proposed. Kaur remembered how excited he was upon learning he would become a father. Their daughter Kudrat has been asking for her father since the incident and shares his smile, making the loss even more painful for the family. Dhillon’s funeral was held on Wednesday, drawing a large gathering of mourners from across New Zealand who came to pay their respects to the departed.
