Priyanka Gandhi Offers Condolences after Two Killed in Wayanad Landslide

Two deaths reported as rescue teams respond in Wayanad.

A major landslide triggered by continuous heavy rainfall in Kerala’s Wayanad district has killed at least two people, while rescue teams continue efforts to locate several others feared trapped under debris. The incident occurred near Meenakshi Bridge at Kalladi, close to the ongoing Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel road project area, where construction workers were present when the landslide struck.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and said rescue operations were underway to save those still trapped. She said police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, and civil defence volunteers had reached the site and were coordinating with the district administration. She also said Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan was personally monitoring the relief and rescue efforts.

"My deepest condolences to those who have lost precious family members," Priyanka Gandhi said, adding that support would be provided to those affected by the disaster. She appealed to Congress workers and members of the public to cooperate with authorities and ensure that rescue operations were not disrupted. She also expressed hope for the safety of those missing and urged families awaiting updates to remain strong during the difficult situation.

According to authorities, the landslide was triggered by intense rainfall in the region, with the area receiving around 265 mm of rain in the previous 24 hours. The force of the landslide damaged vehicles used for transporting workers at the tunnel project site. Local residents joined rescue teams in the initial response, helping pull injured people to safety before emergency services arrived.

At least six injured people were taken to hospitals for medical treatment, while officials continued searching through the debris for survivors. Sources indicated that around 10 people could still be trapped, though authorities were working to confirm the exact number of missing individuals. Rescue teams have been using available resources to clear debris and reach affected areas.

Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan held an emergency meeting with officials, including Agriculture Minister T Siddique, and directed authorities to carry out rescue and relief operations on priority. The administration has continued monitoring the situation as teams from multiple agencies work together to assist victims and prevent further loss of life.
