Pratik Gandhi Calls TIFF Premiere a Proud Moment
Pratik Gandhi’s Gandhi series to premiere at TIFF
Actor Pratik Gandhi says the upcoming world premiere of his ambitious series “Gandhi” at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) next month is a proud moment not just for him and the team but for the entire country.
Directed by Hansal Mehta, the series chronicles the life of Mahatma Gandhi and the key figures of India’s independence movement. Gandhi, best known for his performances in Scam 1992, Madgaon Express, and Saare Jahan Se Accha, called the selection historic, as it marks the first-ever Indian series to be showcased at TIFF.
“TIFF is a big, big moment, not only for me or for the team but for the whole country. We all talk about India as a soft power. This show is made in India for the globe—the first-ever series on Gandhi—and I’m very proud of it,” Pratik said in an interview with PTI.

The series spans the years 1888 to 1947, with its first season focusing on Gandhi’s formative years (1888–1915). Subsequent seasons will cover 1915–1932 and 1932–1947.
Pratik believes the show will highlight the lesser-known, deeply human side of Gandhi. “His human quality is going to be highlighted in the show. That will resonate with everybody across the globe, across generations and age groups. We are showing a Gandhi that nobody really knows.”
The actor also reflected on his personal connection with the surname ‘Gandhi’. “In school, people used to tease me by calling me ‘Bapu’. I hated it then. My father once told me I didn’t yet understand the power of this surname. Years later, I finally do,” he said.
Pratik has previously portrayed Gandhi in the Gujarati play “Mohan No Masalo”, performing more than 500 shows over the last decade. “I had no clue that I was somewhere preparing for this to happen,” he said about stepping into the role for the series.
The show also stars Bhamini Oza Gandhi as Kasturba Gandhi and Tom Felton of Harry Potter fame as Josiah Oldfield. Produced by Applause Entertainment, the series is expected to release in December 2025 after its TIFF world premiere.
