Political Parties Criticise Arrest Of K P Sharma Oli In Nepal

Oli’s arrest sparks criticism, raising tensions in Nepal

The arrest of former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli has triggered sharp reactions across Nepal’s political spectrum, with several parties expressing concern over the move and questioning its timing and intent. The development has added a fresh layer of tension to the country’s already volatile political environment.

Leaders from multiple opposition groups criticised the arrest, describing it as politically motivated and warning that it could undermine democratic norms. They argued that targeting a senior political figure without broad consensus or transparent legal justification risks deepening divisions and eroding public trust in state institutions.

Supporters of Oli, who remains a key figure in Nepali politics, staged protests in parts of Kathmandu and other regions, demanding his immediate release. Demonstrators raised slogans against the government and accused authorities of using legal mechanisms to sideline political opponents. Security has been tightened in sensitive areas to prevent further escalation.

Government representatives, however, defended the action, stating that the arrest was carried out in accordance with the law and due process. Officials maintained that no individual is above the law and emphasised that legal proceedings would follow established judicial norms, urging the public to avoid speculation.

Political analysts say the episode could have wider implications for Nepal’s governance and stability, especially if it leads to prolonged protests or legislative deadlock. The country has experienced frequent political shifts in recent years, and such developments risk further complicating efforts to maintain institutional balance.

As reactions continue to pour in, attention is now focused on the legal process and how authorities handle the case in the coming days. The outcome is likely to influence not only Oli’s political future but also the broader trajectory of Nepal’s democratic framework.
