PM Modi’s Odisha Rally Moved to Jharsuguda as Heavy Rains Threaten Berhampur
PM Modi shifts Odisha rally to Jharsuguda amid severe rain warnings to ensure public safety.
The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in Bhubaneswar announced the relocation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled public meeting on September 27 from Berhampur in Ganjam district to Jharsuguda district, citing adverse weather forecasts. The decision, approved by the central government following a proposal from the Odisha state government, responds to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) prediction of heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, across southern Odisha, including Ganjam, through September 27.
The IMD’s alert points to a low-pressure area expected to form over the Bay of Bengal on September 25, intensifying into a depression by September 26. This weather system is likely to bring intense rainfall and potential disruptions to southern districts, prompting the venue change to ensure the safety of attendees and organizers. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Odisha on 27 September 2025 and address a gathering at Jharsuguda. Earlier, the PM’s visit was planned for Berhampur,” the CMO stated in an official note.
This marks Modi’s sixth visit to Odisha since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assumed power in the state in June 2024, reflecting his ongoing engagement with the region. The Jharsuguda venue, located in western Odisha, offers a more weather-resilient setting, with the IMD forecasting milder conditions in the area compared to the southern districts. The rally is expected to draw thousands of supporters, with the state government and BJP leadership coordinating logistics to accommodate the large turnout and highlight key policy initiatives.

The relocation underscores the Odisha government’s proactive approach to public safety and event management, ensuring that the Prime Minister’s address proceeds without disruption. Jharsuguda, a growing industrial hub, provides a strategic backdrop for Modi’s speech, aligning with the BJP’s focus on development and infrastructure in the state. This change also highlights the challenges posed by climate-driven weather patterns, necessitating adaptive measures for high-profile public events.
