PM Modi's Australia Visit To Focus On Trade, Defence And Critical Minerals
PM Modi's Australia visit focuses on trade, defence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Australia for high-level talks aimed at deepening the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with trade, defence cooperation, critical minerals, technology, counter-terrorism and the welfare of the Indian diaspora expected to dominate the agenda. During the visit, Modi will hold bilateral discussions with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as both countries seek to strengthen cooperation across strategic and economic sectors amid evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific.
Ahead of the visit, Australian High Commissioner to India Philip Green described the trip as an important milestone in bilateral relations during an exclusive interview with NDTV. Green highlighted the strong personal rapport between the two prime ministers, saying it had played a significant role in accelerating cooperation between the two nations. "This is the third time Prime Minister Narendra Modiji has visited Australia as prime minister, and he is taking time for a substantial visit to Melbourne," Green said, adding that Prime Minister Albanese was looking forward to welcoming his "friend, Narendra Modiji."
Trade and investment are expected to feature prominently during the discussions, with both governments seeking to expand economic engagement following the implementation of the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA). Officials are also expected to review progress on negotiations for a broader Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), aimed at increasing bilateral trade, improving market access and facilitating greater investment flows between the two economies. Australia has emerged as an important supplier of critical minerals required for India's clean energy transition and advanced manufacturing ambitions, making resource security another key area of cooperation.

Defence and security collaboration will also be central to the leaders' discussions. India and Australia have steadily expanded military cooperation through joint exercises, maritime security initiatives and intelligence sharing under the framework of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Both countries are members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), alongside the United States and Japan, and share a commitment to promoting a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific based on international law and freedom of navigation. Counter-terrorism cooperation, cyber security, defence technology and maritime domain awareness are also expected to be reviewed during the visit.
Technology partnerships, education, clean energy and people-to-people ties are likely to receive significant attention. Australia has become an increasingly important destination for Indian students, skilled professionals and researchers, while the Indian diaspora continues to play a vital role in strengthening bilateral relations. The leaders are also expected to discuss collaboration in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, renewable energy, space research and digital infrastructure, reflecting the growing strategic convergence between the two countries.
The visit comes at a time when India and Australia are seeking to diversify supply chains, strengthen regional resilience and expand cooperation in response to shifting geopolitical and economic realities in the Indo-Pacific. Over the past few years, bilateral ties have evolved rapidly from a traditional economic partnership into a broad-based strategic relationship encompassing defence, trade, technology and critical resources. Officials on both sides view the visit as an opportunity to accelerate existing initiatives, announce new areas of cooperation and reinforce the shared commitment of New Delhi and Canberra to maintaining regional stability, economic prosperity and a rules-based international order.
