PM Modi Warns “Resilience Can’t Be Built in Silos,” Pushes Unified Climate Strategy at G20

PM unveils bold minerals and space-data plans at Johannesburg summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the G20 Summit’s session on building a resilient world in Johannesburg, warned that escalating climate disasters and food crises demand unified action, declaring that “resilience cannot be built in silos” and calling for development-focused global strategies rather than isolated responses.

Highlighting climate change’s severe impact on agriculture, Modi urged the G20 to integrate nutrition, health, sustainable farming, and disaster preparedness into a comprehensive food-security framework, building on the Deccan Principles adopted during India’s 2023 presidency and pushing developed nations to fulfill long-pending climate finance commitments.

In a major proposal, Modi launched the G20 Critical Minerals Circularity Initiative to promote recycling, urban mining, and second-life battery technologies, aiming to secure clean-energy supply chains, reduce dependency on volatile sources, and accelerate the global shift to renewables through collaborative research and responsible mining practices.

He also proposed the G20 Open Satellite Data Partnership, offering developing nations free access to high-quality satellite imagery from G20 space agencies for agriculture monitoring, disaster early-warning systems, and fisheries management, a move designed to bridge the technology gap and empower the Global South with real-time, life-saving information.

The Johannesburg Summit concluded with the adoption of the Leaders’ Declaration, incorporating India-backed priorities on disaster resilience, energy transitions, and inclusive growth, reinforcing the G20’s role—under consecutive Global South presidencies—as the key platform for equitable solutions to humanity’s pressing challenges.
