PM Modi Visits Japan's Semiconductor Plant, Arrives via Bullet Train

PM Modi visits Japan semiconductor plant, boosting tech ties with Tokyo.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accompanied by Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, traveled to Sendai in Miyagi prefecture on Saturday to visit a cutting-edge semiconductor facility, a highlight of his two-day visit to Japan that began on August 29. The leaders journeyed from Tokyo via bullet train, underscoring the deepening technological and strategic partnership between India and Japan.

The visit follows summit talks on Friday, where both nations committed to enhancing bilateral cooperation through a 10-year roadmap focusing on defense, trade, technology, and business.

The Sendai tour is part of Modi’s broader agenda to explore advanced manufacturing, including visits to four factories, one of which produces a prototype of the E10 Shinkansen bullet train, which India is considering for purchase. The visit comes amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian goods, prompting New Delhi to seek alternative export markets and strengthen economic ties with allies like Japan.

Modi is also expected to sign several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to bolster collaborationullo in semiconductors, clean energy, and telecommunications, aligning with India’s ambition to become a global hub for technology and innovation.

Modi’s engagements, including discussions with 16 Japanese prefecture governors, reflect a strategic push for sub-national and technological collaboration. The semiconductor plant visit highlights opportunities for knowledge transfer and investment, critical for India’s growing tech sector.

Following this, Modi will travel to Tianjin, China, for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit on August 31 and September 1, further showcasing India’s proactive diplomacy in navigating global economic challenges.
