PM Modi Remembers Partition Victims, Says Their Courage Must Never Be Forgotten

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday marked Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, paying tribute to those who suffered during the Partition of India and recalling the courage of people who rebuilt their lives after being displaced and separated from their families. The day is observed on August 14 to remember the human suffering and displacement associated with the Partition of 1947. In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi said the occasion was a time to remember the courage of those affected by the Partition.

He said the division of the country “tore apart several lives”, with families being uprooted, loved ones lost and people enduring immense suffering. His message focused on remembering those experiences while also acknowledging the resilience shown by survivors in the years that followed. Modi said that despite the scale of the disruption and loss, people rebuilt their lives from nothing and went on to contribute significantly to the country's progress. He described their journeys as a reminder of the strength of the human spirit and said their efforts had transformed adversity into achievement.

The Prime Minister also used the occasion to call for greater harmony and brotherhood in the country. He said remembering the painful experiences of Partition should strengthen the resolve to preserve social unity and work collectively towards building a “Viksit Bharat”. His message placed the remembrance of historical suffering alongside a call for national cohesion. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to those who lost their lives and suffered during the Partition.

Shah described August 14, 1947, as one of the most brutal chapters in history while remembering the victims of the violence and displacement that accompanied the division of British India. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, joining other leaders in recalling the suffering associated with the events of 1947. The day has become an occasion for remembering the large-scale displacement, loss of life and separation of families that followed Partition, while highlighting the resilience of those who were forced to rebuild their lives.

Partition resulted in one of the largest mass migrations in modern history, with millions of people moving across the newly created borders of India and Pakistan. The upheaval was accompanied by widespread communal violence and the loss of lives and homes. By remembering those affected, political leaders on Friday emphasised the importance of preserving social harmony and ensuring that the suffering associated with the period is not forgotten.
