PM Modi Recommends Smooth Driving, Maintenance To Maximise Fuel Efficiency

PM Modi urges drivers to adopt fuel-saving habits.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently raised public awareness about energy security amid rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia and volatility in global oil markets. Speaking in a national address, he drew parallels between the ongoing Iran-Israel-US conflict and the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting how disruptions to global supply chains during crises can affect everyday life. His comments sparked widespread discussion online, with some interpreting them as a caution about potential “lockdown-like” scenarios.

Modi urged citizens to remain vigilant and united, emphasizing the importance of avoiding panic and rumours. “Because of this war, the difficult global situation may continue for a long time. Therefore, we must remain prepared and stay united. We have faced such challenges before during the coronavirus pandemic. We must remain very careful and alert. Some people will try to spread rumours to take advantage of the situation. We must not allow such people to succeed,” he said.

While India is not facing a lockdown, developments in other countries highlight potential ripple effects of energy crises. Sri Lanka has enforced public holidays for schools and non-essential staff, Bangladesh has shifted education online with scheduled power cuts, and Pakistan and the Philippines have adopted shorter workweeks for civil servants. Vietnam has encouraged remote work for businesses, while Pakistan even cancelled the opening ceremony of the PSL and urged citizens to restrict movements amid rising fuel prices.

In this context, experts emphasise that individual driving habits can significantly impact fuel efficiency and cost savings. Smooth driving—avoiding sudden acceleration, frequent braking, and erratic lane changes—helps engines operate more efficiently while reducing wear and tear. Maintaining a consistent speed, particularly on highways, further optimises fuel use and prevents unnecessary consumption.

Reducing idling during stops, keeping vehicles well-maintained, and monitoring tyre pressure, engine oil, and air filters can improve mileage. Additionally, cutting excess weight from vehicles and planning trips efficiently—combining errands and avoiding peak traffic hours—helps lower fuel usage and emissions.

While global events influence fuel availability and pricing, conscious driving and proper vehicle upkeep remain practical ways to enhance efficiency. Experts suggest that adopting these habits not only reduces fuel costs but also contributes to sustainable energy use, ensuring drivers can navigate uncertain times more economically and responsibly.
