PM Modi Prioritises Civilian Safety, Urges Netanyahu to Halt Iran Hostilities

PM Modi conveyed India's worries over West Asia unrest to Netanyahu, pushing de-escalation to protect lives.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the safety of civilians remains the "utmost priority" during a telephonic conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The call took place on Sunday night, March 1, 2026, shortly after the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli airstrikes, which has sparked protests in parts of Delhi and raised fears of regional retaliation. In a post on X, PM Modi stated he conveyed India's concerns over recent developments and reiterated the need for an early cessation of hostilities to prevent further escalation. This diplomatic outreach underscores India's balanced approach to its strategic ties with both Israel and Iran.

Netanyahu, who had earlier hailed the strikes as a blow to the Iranian regime, received Modi's message as part of a series of high-level talks by the Indian leader. Just prior, Modi spoke with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, condemning attacks on the UAE by Iran and expressing solidarity amid disruptions like the reported closure of the Strait of Hormuz, critical for India's oil imports. These conversations reflect India's proactive stance in urging restraint while safeguarding its economic and citizen interests in the region.

Security measures in Delhi were already tightened following Shia-led mourning protests over Khamenei's death, with additional police and barricades deployed near key sites. Modi's emphasis on civilian safety aligns with these domestic efforts, as the government monitors potential spillover effects from the conflict. Indian missions have activated helplines for nationals in affected areas, ensuring constant communication.

India's position draws from its longstanding policy of strategic autonomy, maintaining defense and trade partnerships with Israel while preserving energy ties with Iran. The Modi-Netanyahu dialogue builds on prior interactions, including discussions on counter-terrorism and regional peace, amid vows of Iranian retaliation. Analysts note this call signals New Delhi's intent to mediate de-escalation without alienating key allies.

As the situation evolves, India's Cabinet Committee on Security reviewed implications, prioritizing evacuation readiness if needed. PM Modi's outreach highlights a commitment to diplomacy, with civilian protection at the forefront amid global calls for restraint.
