PM Modi, PM Albanese Announce First-Ever BBL Match in Chennai

PM Modi announces first-ever Big Bash League match in Chennai.

The opening match of the 2026-27 Big Bash League season will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on December 12, with the Melbourne Renegades taking on the Perth Scorchers. The landmark fixture will mark the first time in the tournament’s history that a BBL match is played outside Australia.

The announcement was made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The historic match will form the centrepiece of a wider initiative called “G’day Namaste”, aimed at strengthening ties between India and Australia through cricket and broader cultural engagement.

Cricket Australia officials expect a large turnout for the match, citing Chennai’s passionate cricket culture and the existing popularity of the Big Bash League among Indian fans. Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s executive general manager of Big Bash Leagues, said discussions surrounding the event had generated strong optimism about attendance at the venue.

The fixture will officially be treated as a home match for the Melbourne Renegades. Both the Renegades and the Perth Scorchers will receive additional time to return to Australia before their next matches in the competition. The complete schedule for the 2026-27 Big Bash League season is expected to be announced next week, according to media reports.

Several BBL franchises reportedly showed interest in participating in the overseas fixture, although some teams chose not to formally apply because of concerns over a demanding schedule. Cricket Australia considered multiple factors while selecting the participating clubs, including travel arrangements, fixture scheduling and the ability to accommodate the international match without significantly disrupting the rest of the season.

The Chennai encounter represents a major step in the Big Bash League’s efforts to expand its international presence and connect with cricket audiences beyond Australia. With the Renegades and Scorchers set to meet at one of India’s most famous cricket venues, organisers expect the December 12 fixture to attract significant attention from fans in both countries and open new possibilities for future BBL matches overseas.
