Prime Minister Narendra Modi held high-stakes summit talks with his Japanese counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba, on Friday, aiming to elevate the India-Japan partnership to new heights in trade, investment, and cutting-edge technologies. The 15th India-Japan Summit, convened hours after Modi’s arrival in Tokyo, underscored the strategic importance of deepening bilateral ties amid global economic challenges.
Addressing the India-Japan Business Forum earlier, Modi highlighted the synergy between Japan’s technological prowess and India’s talent pool, stating, “Together, we can lead the tech revolution of this century.” The summit is expected to yield significant outcomes, particularly in strengthening economic collaboration, with bilateral trade reaching USD 22 billion in 2023–24 and Japan standing as India’s fifth-largest source of foreign direct investment, contributing USD 43.2 billion by December 2024.
Modi also met former Japanese Prime Ministers Yoshihide Suga and Fumio Kishida, reinforcing long-standing ties. Discussions with Ishiba focused on expanding cooperation in emerging sectors like artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and green energy, alongside traditional areas like infrastructure and manufacturing. The leaders explored ways to enhance people-to-people ties and foster innovation-driven growth.
