PM Modi Launches Rs 2,700 Crore Projects Covering Health, Education, Connectivity
Prime Minister launches infrastructure, healthcare and education projects to accelerate Puducherry’s growth.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth over Rs 2,700 crore in the Union Territory, spanning infrastructure, education, healthcare, housing and urban mobility. Addressing a public gathering, he said the initiatives are aimed at improving ease of living and accelerating economic growth in the region.
Describing Puducherry as the land of Siddhars, saints and freedom fighters, the Prime Minister recalled the contributions of poet Subramania Bharati and spiritual leaders Sri Aurobindo and Mirra Alfassa in shaping India’s intellectual and spiritual heritage. Reiterating his vision of “BEST Puducherry” — Business, Education, Spirituality and Tourism — he said the past four and a half years had seen progress in governance, rising per capita income and improved social indicators in the Union Territory.
Highlighting infrastructure as a national priority, Modi noted the record capital outlay in the Union Budget and announced Puducherry’s inclusion under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment scheme. Major connectivity projects include works worth over Rs 1,000 crore to decongest the town, including a new flyover estimated at Rs 440 crore, and upgrades to the East Coast Road and Grand Southern Trunk Road aimed at reducing travel time between Puducherry and Chennai to under two hours.

In the education sector, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Engineering Block and new hostel facilities at the National Institute of Technology Karaikal. Infrastructure upgrades have also been completed at Pondicherry University. He also highlighted the filling of long-pending government vacancies through direct recruitment drives to empower youth in public service.
On healthcare, Modi underscored the expansion of facilities at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, including the modernisation of its Regional Cancer Centre. Foundation stones were laid for Critical Care Blocks under the PM-ABHIM scheme in Puducherry and Karaikal, along with a new Integrated AYUSH Hospital in Karaikal. Electric buses were also introduced under the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme to promote clean mobility, alongside projects in water desalination, sewage treatment and flood mitigation across Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. Concluding his address, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his commitment to transforming the Union Territory as part of the broader vision of a developed India by 2047.
