PM Modi Lands in Slovakia For State Visit, First Indian PM in 33 Years
PM Modi Makes Historic First Visit To Slovakia In 33 Years
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Slovakia marks a historic milestone in India-Slovakia relations, as it will be the first time an Indian Prime Minister sets foot in the Central European nation since it gained independence in 1993. The visit, scheduled to run through June 16 and undertaken at the invitation of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, is expected to significantly expand bilateral engagement beyond traditional diplomatic exchanges into broader strategic and economic cooperation.
The trip comes after PM Modi’s engagements in France and is being viewed as part of India’s broader effort to strengthen ties with key European partners. His arrival in Bratislava is seen as symbolically important, reflecting a shift in the relationship from limited, formal interactions to a more dynamic partnership focused on emerging global priorities such as trade, technology, and security cooperation.
Diplomatic relations between India and Slovakia were formally established in 1993 following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. Slovakia opened its resident mission in New Delhi the same year, and India established its embassy in Bratislava in 1995. Since then, bilateral ties have progressed steadily but at a relatively modest pace, with periodic diplomatic consultations and limited high-level visits shaping the framework of engagement over the decades.

Officials indicate that the current visit is expected to inject new momentum into this long-standing relationship, particularly in sectors such as defence cooperation, digital innovation, renewable energy, and industrial collaboration. The discussions are also likely to touch upon expanding trade ties and enhancing investment flows, with both sides exploring opportunities for deeper economic integration.
A key focus of the talks is expected to be the India–European Union free trade agreement, which has been under negotiation for several years. Slovakia’s position as a member of the EU makes it a relevant partner in advancing India’s engagement with the broader European bloc. The visit is also expected to result in a series of agreements and memorandums aimed at institutionalising cooperation across multiple sectors.
As Prime Minister Modi concludes his engagements in Europe with the Slovakia visit, the trip is being viewed as part of India’s evolving foreign policy strategy that emphasises diversified partnerships and global outreach. Analysts suggest that the outcomes of the Bratislava visit could set the tone for a more structured and high-value partnership between the two countries in the coming years.
