PM Modi Backs Trump’s Praise Amid Tense US-India Ties

PM Modi reaffirms strong India-US bond despite tariff row.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday warmly responded to US President Donald Trump’s positive remarks about India-US relations, emphasizing the enduring strength of their bilateral ties. In a social media post on X, Modi expressed deep appreciation for Trump’s sentiments, stating, “Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump’s sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”

Modi’s comments came hours after Trump, speaking at the White House on Friday, described the India-US relationship as “very special” and affirmed his personal friendship with Modi, saying, “I’ll always be friends with (Narendra) Modi, he’s a great prime minister.” However, Trump also voiced concerns about India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, noting, “I just don’t like what he’s doing at this particular moment.” He added, “There’s nothing to worry about. We just have moments on occasion,” downplaying tensions sparked by recent US tariffs on Indian goods.

The exchange follows a period of strained relations, with Washington imposing a 50% tariff on Indian exports, largely in response to India’s oil trade with Russia. Trump had previously claimed on Truth Social that the US had “lost India and Russia to deepest, darkest China,” a statement he later clarified, saying, “I don’t think we have.” He reiterated his disappointment over India’s energy deals but emphasized his strong personal rapport with Modi.

Modi’s response marks his first public comment on Trump’s remarks since the tariff hikes, which include a 25% tariff announced earlier and an additional 25% over Russia’s oil purchases. Despite these tensions, both leaders appear committed to preserving the strategic partnership, which spans defense, trade, technology, and people-to-people ties. Modi’s post underscores India’s focus on a “forward-looking” partnership, signaling an intent to navigate current challenges while maintaining robust cooperation with the US.

Political observers note that this public exchange could pave the way for renewed dialogue to address trade disputes and geopolitical concerns. With India continuing its energy purchases from Russia, as affirmed by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who cited cost and national interest, the path forward will require careful diplomacy. The positive tone from both leaders suggests an effort to stabilize ties amid a complex global landscape.
