PM Modi Awarded Slovakia’s Highest Civilian Honour During Official Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Slovakia’s highest national honour, The Order of the White Double Cross (1st Class), during an official ceremony held in Bratislava on Monday. The award was presented by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, marking a significant diplomatic moment in India–Slovakia relations and highlighting growing bilateral engagement between the two countries.

The honour is the highest state decoration of Slovakia and is awarded to foreign nationals for exceptional contributions to the country’s interests and international relations. According to officials, this recognition represents an important gesture of goodwill and reflects strengthening political, economic and cultural ties between India and Slovakia.

Following the ceremony, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude for the award in a post on social media platform X. He stated that the honour belonged to the 1.4 billion people of India and dedicated it to the long-standing friendship between the two nations. He also described the recognition as a symbol of mutual trust, warmth and cooperation between India and Slovakia.

The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that the award reflects the strong and evolving partnership between the two countries. It added that the honour underscores the shared commitment to deepening cooperation and could serve as an inspiration for future generations to further strengthen bilateral relations across multiple sectors.

Prime Minister Modi is currently on a multi-nation visit to Europe, with his trip to Slovakia marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to the country. During the visit, India and Slovakia also elevated their diplomatic engagement to a comprehensive partnership, agreeing on 11 key agreements covering areas such as migration, digital technology, defence cooperation and economic collaboration.

The visit and the award ceremony are being seen as part of broader efforts to expand India’s strategic outreach in Europe, with both sides expressing optimism about future cooperation and long-term partnership growth.
