PM Modi Announces Unveiling of Ambedkar Bust at UNESCO Headquarters

Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked India’s Constitution Day by announcing the unveiling of a bust of Dr B.R. Ambedkar at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, describing the international recognition as a “fitting tribute” to the architect of the Indian Constitution. The ceremony, held on 26 November, coincided with the 75th anniversary of the Constitution’s adoption in 1949.
In a post on X, Modi stated that the Paris installation reflected global acknowledgment of Dr Ambedkar’s monumental contribution to democracy and social justice. “His thoughts and ideals give strength and hope to innumerable people,” the Prime Minister wrote, underscoring the enduring relevance of Ambedkar’s vision of equality and fraternity beyond India’s borders.
Constitution Day celebrations across India featured a special message from Modi to citizens, urging greater emphasis on fundamental duties alongside rights. He recalled the historic sessions of the Constituent Assembly under Dr Rajendra Prasad and highlighted the pivotal role of Ambedkar’s Drafting Committee, while paying tribute to the fifteen women members whose contributions enriched the final document.

President Droupadi Murmu also commemorated the occasion by saluting Dr Ambedkar’s leadership in crafting the world’s longest written constitution, which transformed India into a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic. Adopted on 26 November 1949 and enforced from 26 January 1950, the Constitution established separation of powers, an independent judiciary, and guaranteed justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity for every citizen.
The placement of Dr Ambedkar’s bust at UNESCO—a first for any Indian leader at the organisation’s Paris headquarters—symbolises universal appreciation of his struggle against caste discrimination and his advocacy for human dignity. As India continues to position itself as a leading voice for the Global South, this permanent tribute in the heart of Europe reinforces the Constitution’s foundational values on the international stage.
