PM Modi and Dissanayake Commit to Physical, Digital and Energy Connectivity at AI Summit
Both leaders reviewed bilateral progress, including India's cyclone relief and reconstruction assistance to Sri Lanka.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on the sidelines of the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. The meeting focused on reviewing bilateral cooperation and strengthening commitments to connectivity and technology-driven development. Both leaders highlighted the importance of stability in the Indian Ocean Region. President Dissanayake was in India for the summit, marking his second visit since assuming office. Their discussions underscored the growing momentum in high-level exchanges between the two neighbours.
The leaders took stock of initiatives from PM Modi’s April 2025 visit to Sri Lanka. They discussed accelerating cooperation across three key pillars: physical, digital, and energy connectivity. These areas have become central to India-Sri Lanka relations. Both emphasised that enhanced collaboration can boost economic growth. Connectivity projects were highlighted as tools for regional integration and shared prosperity.
Technology and artificial intelligence featured prominently in the dialogue. PM Modi and President Dissanayake exchanged views on responsible AI deployment for development. They agreed AI can improve service delivery and support inclusive growth. The leaders noted its potential to benefit developing economies like Sri Lanka. Cooperation in AI was seen as a way to strengthen technological ties between the countries.

A significant part of the discussion covered India’s assistance after Cyclone Ditwah. President Dissanayake thanked India for rapid relief and search-and-rescue support under ‘Operation Sagar Bandhu'. The leaders noted progress on a USD 450 million aid package for reconstruction. This support aims to restore infrastructure and livelihoods in affected areas. They highlighted India’s role as a reliable partner in crisis response and recovery.
Cultural and civilisational ties were also emphasised during the talks. The successful exposition of the Holy Devnimori relics in Sri Lanka was welcomed as strengthening people-to-people links. Both leaders agreed that shared heritage deepens mutual understanding and goodwill. Future cooperation will focus on sustainable development and regional security. The meeting reaffirmed a forward-looking, resilient, and people-centric partnership between India and Sri Lanka.
