PM Modi Addresses Indonesian Parliament, Outlines India’s Development Vision

PM Modi outlines India’s development-focused foreign policy approach.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed the Indonesian parliament and said India’s approach is focused on development rather than expansionism, while calling for stronger cooperation between India and Indonesia. His remarks came amid increasing regional concerns over strategic tensions and military activities in parts of the Indo-Pacific region.

Addressing Indonesian lawmakers, including President Prabowo Subianto and senior government officials, Modi highlighted the importance of a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific. He said India supports freedom of navigation in the region and believes in cooperation based on mutual respect and shared growth. He emphasised that India follows a path of development and not territorial expansion.

During his speech, Modi spoke about the historical relationship between India and Indonesia, tracing the partnership back to the 1950s. He highlighted the role played by both countries in the 1955 Bandung Conference, which brought together Asian and African nations to promote peace, cooperation, and solidarity among newly independent countries. He said the two nations have significant opportunities to expand collaboration across multiple sectors.

The Prime Minister described the sea between India and Indonesia not as a barrier but as a connection that has historically linked the two countries. He said stronger cooperation between the world’s two large democracies could demonstrate how democratic systems create opportunities, build trust, and contribute to global stability.

Modi also discussed areas where India and Indonesia can deepen cooperation, including counter-terrorism efforts, cybersecurity, prevention of terror financing, and addressing radicalisation. He said both countries can work together to strengthen peace-oriented forces while also supporting reforms in international institutions, including the United Nations Security Council.

The address followed bilateral discussions between Modi and President Prabowo Subianto, during which India and Indonesia signed agreements covering areas such as defence cooperation, critical minerals, technology, food security, medicines, and maritime security. Modi’s visit to Indonesia marks the first leg of his three-nation tour, which also includes Australia and New Zealand, aimed at strengthening trade and strategic partnerships.
