Plane Collides With Paraglider In Dangerous Mid-Air Aviation Incident

Plane collides with paraglider, tearing canopy during mid-air incident.

A paraglider narrowly escaped death after a small aircraft collided with her mid-air over the Austrian Alps, tearing through her canopy and sending her spiralling toward the ground before she successfully deployed an emergency parachute. The dramatic incident took place on Saturday afternoon near Schmittenhohe mountain, a well-known paragliding destination in northern Austria, and has since gained widespread attention online after first-person footage of the collision surfaced on social media.

According to Salzburg State Police, the paraglider, identified as 44-year-old Sabrina, was flying with a mounted camera when a sightseeing plane suddenly passed directly through her canopy. The shocking footage captured the moment the aircraft sliced through the paraglider wing just above her head, splitting the canopy in half and causing an immediate loss of control. Sabrina could be heard screaming as she rapidly descended in a dangerous spin.

Authorities said the paraglider reacted quickly by deploying her reserve parachute after the main canopy was severely damaged by the plane’s propeller. Emergency responders later transported her by helicopter to a nearby airport for medical evaluation. Police confirmed that despite the severity of the incident, neither Sabrina nor the 28-year-old pilot of the aircraft suffered serious injuries.

After landing at Zell am See Airport, the pilot reportedly informed authorities that he had been unable to avoid the collision. Investigators are now examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, including flight paths and visibility conditions at the time of the accident. The collision has renewed concerns regarding safety coordination in shared recreational airspace commonly used by paragliders and small aircraft.

Sabrina later shared an update on social media, saying she survived the ordeal with only bruises and minor injuries. In a post written in German, she said she still could not believe she had walked away alive after the mid-air collision. The footage has since circulated widely online, drawing reactions from aviation experts and adventure sports enthusiasts who described the escape as extraordinarily fortunate.

The incident has also highlighted the importance of emergency backup systems in paragliding and other aerial sports. Aviation and safety experts note that reserve parachutes are designed specifically for catastrophic canopy failures and can significantly improve survival chances during unexpected mid-air emergencies. Authorities have not yet announced whether further action or additional safety reviews will follow the investigation.
