Petrol, Diesel Prices Remain Unchanged Across Major Cities On June 15

Petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged across major Indian cities on June 15, providing temporary relief to consumers after a series of fuel price hikes in recent weeks. Fuel rates have risen four times since the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict, with the latest increase of ₹2.60 per litre for petrol and ₹2.70 per litre for diesel announced last month. Overall, prices have climbed by approximately ₹7.5 to ₹8 per litre since the crisis began, reflecting the sharp rise in global crude oil prices.

According to the latest rates, petrol is priced at ₹102.12 per litre in Delhi, ₹113.51 in Kolkata, ₹111.21 in Mumbai, ₹108.01 in Chennai, ₹115.73 in Hyderabad and ₹110.89 in Bengaluru. Diesel prices stand at ₹95.20 per litre in Delhi, ₹99.82 in Kolkata, ₹97.83 in Mumbai, ₹99.66 in Chennai, ₹103.82 in Hyderabad and ₹98.80 in Bengaluru. The variation in prices across cities is primarily due to differences in state taxes and local levies.

The recent surge in fuel costs has been attributed to volatility in global energy markets amid tensions in the Middle East. State-owned oil marketing companies reportedly faced losses of ₹1,600 crore to ₹1,700 crore per day during the crisis, amounting to more than ₹1 lakh crore over a 10-week period. The sustained increase in fuel prices has added to household expenses and raised concerns about inflationary pressures.

Fuel prices in India are determined by several factors, with international crude oil prices playing the most significant role. The rupee-dollar exchange rate also affects costs because India imports a substantial portion of its crude oil requirements. In addition, central excise duties and state-level value-added taxes (VAT) influence retail prices, leading to differences in fuel rates from one city to another.
