Petals, Dhols, and Pride: India’s World Cup-Winning Women’s Team Gets Grand Welcome in Delhi

Cricket heroines land in Delhi for historic welcome after World Cup win.

The Indian women's cricket team, led by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday evening after their historic 50-over World Cup victory over South Africa in Navi Mumbai. The squad, which defeated the Proteas by 52 runs in Sunday's final, will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday for a grand felicitation. This triumph marks India’s first-ever Women’s ODI World Cup title, a monumental achievement in a cricket-obsessed nation where the women’s game has long fought for recognition.

Upon arrival at the Taj Palace hotel, the players were greeted with showers of rose petals as they entered the luxurious lobby. Stars like Jemimah Rodrigues, Radha Yadav, and Sneh Rana broke into joyful dance to the beat of dhol drums, cheered on by staff and onlookers. The festive scene captured the nation’s pride in their heroes, who turned years of near-misses into a defining moment of glory under coach Amol Muzumdar’s guidance.

Earlier, the team received a warm send-off from Mumbai airport, where fans gathered in large numbers. In Delhi, strict security at the General Aviation Terminal restricted public access, with only media present. A special Star Air charter flight brought the team from Mumbai, while police conducted thorough checks on the team bus and routes using sniffer dogs to ensure safety.

The Prime Minister’s meeting on Wednesday will honor the team’s remarkable campaign, from Shafali Verma’s explosive batting to Deepti Sharma’s all-round brilliance. Most players will return home after the event, except Shafali, who will lead North Zone in the Inter-Zonal T20 in Nagaland. The victory has sparked calls for victory parades and greater support for women’s cricket.

This World Cup win is a turning point for Indian women’s cricket, inspiring millions and proving that persistence and talent can conquer the biggest stages. With global praise and national celebration, the team’s homecoming blends emotion, pride, and hope for a brighter future in the sport.
