Pakistan: One Killed, 25 Hurt in Train Derailment
Awam Express derailment kills one, injures 25.
Derailment of the Awam Express in Pakistan’s Punjab province claimed one life and left 25 passengers injured on Sunday, marking the third such incident in the region this month. The train, traveling from Peshawar to Karachi, derailed in Lodhran district, approximately 400 km from Lahore, according to Deputy Commissioner Lubna Nazir.
Four coaches of the Awam Express veered off the tracks, causing chaos and prompting an immediate response from rescue teams. “One passenger was killed, and 25 others were injured, with three in critical condition,” Nazir told reporters. The injured were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, where medical staff are working to stabilize the most severely affected.
Rescue operations have concluded, and railway authorities are now focused on restoring the damaged track to resume services. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation, with initial reports suggesting possible track failure or mechanical issues.

This incident follows two other derailments in Punjab this month. On August 11, five passengers were injured when the Musa Pak Express derailed near Raiwind, Lahore, en route to Multan. Earlier, on August 3, 30 passengers were hurt when 10 coaches of the Islamabad Express derailed shortly after leaving Lahore. The recurring accidents have raised serious concerns about the safety of Pakistan’s railway infrastructure.
Local residents and passengers expressed frustration, calling for urgent upgrades to aging tracks and stricter safety protocols. “This is becoming too common. The government needs to act before more lives are lost,” said Mohammad Aslam, a witness to the Lodhran derailment.
Authorities have promised a thorough probe, with railway officials vowing to implement measures to prevent future tragedies. For now, the focus remains on supporting the victims and their families as Punjab grapples with its troubled rail network.
