Pakistan Military Mi-17 Helicopter Crashes in Muzaffarabad, No Survivors Reported
Military Mi-17 crashes in Muzaffarabad, killing all onboard.
A Pakistan Army Mi-17 helicopter crashed near Muzaffarabad during take-off on Wednesday, killing all personnel on board, according to the military’s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The accident has prompted an official investigation into what authorities described as a suspected technical malfunction. In a statement, the ISPR said the helicopter belonged to the Pakistan Army’s aviation wing and went down shortly after take-off. Rescue and recovery teams were immediately dispatched to the crash site following the incident. The military confirmed that none of the occupants survived the crash.
“All personnel on board embraced martyrdom. There were no survivors,” the ISPR said. While the exact number of personnel aboard the aircraft was not immediately disclosed, the statement described the loss as a significant tragedy for the armed forces. The military added that preliminary assessments pointed to a possible technical fault as the cause of the crash. However, officials stressed that the precise circumstances leading to the accident remain under investigation. To determine the cause, the army has constituted a board of inquiry that will examine technical, operational, and maintenance-related aspects of the flight.
Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir expressed grief over the loss of life. According to the ISPR, the Chief of Army Staff and all ranks of the Pakistan Army extended their condolences to the families of those killed in the crash and paid tribute to the deceased personnel. The incident is the latest in a series of military aviation accidents reported in Pakistan in recent years. Military helicopters are routinely used for transportation, logistics, reconnaissance, and operational support in the country’s mountainous regions, where flying conditions can often be challenging.

In September 2025, another Pakistan Army helicopter crashed during a routine flight in the northern part of the country, killing two pilots and three technicians, according to reports. That accident also triggered concerns about operational safety and aircraft maintenance within the military aviation fleet. The Mi-17 is a widely used transport helicopter operated by several armed forces around the world. Known for its versatility, the aircraft is employed in troop transport, cargo movement, disaster relief operations, and other military missions.
While generally regarded as a reliable platform, aviation experts note that regular maintenance and technical oversight are critical to ensuring safe operations, particularly in difficult terrain and high-altitude environments. The findings of the inquiry board are expected to provide further clarity on the circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s crash. Until then, the Pakistan military is likely to focus on recovery efforts and support for the families of the personnel who lost their lives in the accident.
