Pakistan Deploys Chinese SH-15 Howitzers Along Border, Report Highlights Enhanced Firepower

Pakistan has reportedly deployed 250 Chinese-made SH-15 truck-mounted self-propelled howitzers along its border with India, significantly enhancing its long-range artillery capabilities. According to intelligence-based reports, the 155mm artillery systems have been positioned across multiple sectors along Pakistan's eastern frontier, stretching from the northern to southern regions bordering India. The reported deployment is being viewed as one of Pakistan's most significant military upgrades since India's Operation Sindoor, the counterterrorism operation launched in May 2025 following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.

The induction of the artillery systems is expected to strengthen Pakistan's firepower and mobility along the border. The SH-15 is a truck-mounted self-propelled gun-howitzer developed by China's state-owned defence manufacturer NORINCO. Designed for rapid deployment and high mobility, the artillery system combines long-range firepower with the ability to quickly relocate after firing, making it more difficult to target through counter-battery strikes. Equipped with a 155mm gun, the SH-15 is capable of firing NATO-compatible ammunition, allowing it to use a variety of standard artillery shells.

Depending on the type of ammunition used, the system is reported to have a firing range of approximately 30 to 50 kilometres, enabling it to engage targets deep inside enemy territory. The artillery platform is powered by a 400-horsepower diesel engine and reportedly offers a power-to-weight ratio of 15.68 horsepower per tonne. Its wheeled configuration provides greater operational flexibility than conventional towed artillery, allowing it to move quickly across different types of terrain. Military experts consider truck-mounted self-propelled howitzers an important component of modern warfare because they combine mobility, survivability and precision fire support.

The ability to deploy, fire and rapidly reposition enhances battlefield effectiveness while reducing exposure to enemy retaliation. The reported deployment comes amid continued military modernisation efforts by both India and Pakistan. Over the past few years, both countries have invested in upgrading their artillery, missile and surveillance capabilities as part of broader efforts to strengthen border preparedness. Pakistan and China have maintained close defence cooperation for decades, with Beijing supplying a range of military equipment, including fighter aircraft, naval platforms, air defence systems and artillery.

The reported induction of 250 SH-15 howitzers would further deepen that defence partnership. Neither Pakistan's military nor the Chinese government has officially confirmed the reported deployment. Indian authorities have also not issued any official statement regarding the intelligence reports. If confirmed, the deployment would represent a significant addition to Pakistan's conventional military capabilities along the border and reflects the continuing emphasis by both neighbouring countries on strengthening their defence infrastructure amid evolving regional security dynamics.
