Outrage Grows Against Balen Shah Government After Bike Rider's Self-Immolation In Nepal

The death of a 25-year-old ride-sharing motorbike rider who set himself ablaze outside a government office has ignited widespread outrage against the Nepali government, triggering protests in the streets of Kathmandu and inside Parliament as citizens demand justice and accountability for alleged police overreach. Ganesh Nepali, who supported himself through ride-sharing services, had his motorcycle locked by Kathmandu Metropolitan Police on Thursday for allegedly parking in a prohibited public area outside the Passport Office. He was issued a fine of NR 1,000. According to eyewitness accounts, a verbal confrontation with officers escalated, leading Nepali to pour petrol from his vehicle over himself and ignite it. Police officers acted swiftly to douse the flames, but the young man sustained critical burn injuries.

He was transported to Bir Hospital in Kathmandu, where he succumbed to his wounds early Friday morning. The incident quickly sparked intense public demonstrations, reflecting deep-seated frustrations with law enforcement practices and administrative inefficiencies in the capital. Protesters gathered on the streets, while lawmakers voiced concerns during parliamentary sessions, calling for an immediate and transparent investigation. Many viewed the self-immolation as a desperate act stemming from economic hardship and perceived harassment faced by informal sector workers who depend on daily earnings to survive in Nepal’s challenging urban environment.

In a bid to quell the growing unrest, the government promptly established a five-member probe committee tasked with thoroughly investigating the circumstances of Nepali’s death. The committee is expected to examine the police’s actions, the validity of the parking violation, and the overall handling of the encounter. Officials have emphasized their commitment to an impartial process, hoping the move will restore public confidence and prevent further escalation of protests that have disrupted normal activities in parts of Kathmandu.
