Opposition Parties Push Congress to Seal Alliance in Assam Ahead of Key Meet
Assam opposition parties urge Congress to finalise alliance during a key meeting ahead of elections.
Opposition parties in Assam have urged the Indian National Congress (INC) to finalise seat-sharing and alliance strategies ahead of a crucial meeting scheduled later this week. Lawmakers and party leaders stressed the importance of presenting a united front against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming state assembly elections.
Senior leaders from regional parties, including the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), are reportedly in talks with Congress officials to ensure coordination on candidate selection and campaign strategies. They highlighted that delays in formalising the alliance could weaken opposition momentum and give the BJP an advantage in the elections.
Congress state unit president Debabrata Saikia indicated that discussions were ongoing and said the party aims to balance regional aspirations with broader electoral strategy. “We are working to ensure that all opposition forces come together cohesively,” Saikia said, stressing the need for unity to effectively counter the BJP’s dominance in Assam.

Political analysts note that Assam’s electoral landscape is complex, with multiple regional parties holding significant influence in various districts. The success of any opposition coalition may hinge on aligning local interests with statewide electoral priorities, making timely alliance decisions critical.
The upcoming meeting is expected to address contentious issues such as seat distribution, campaign messaging, and coordination for the crucial assembly constituencies. Observers say the outcome could shape the opposition’s overall effectiveness in challenging the ruling party.
As Assam moves closer to the elections, the pressure on Congress and its potential allies to present a unified front intensifies. Political experts suggest that the decisions made in the next few days could determine the trajectory of the state’s electoral battle.
