Omar Abdullah Mocks Gyanesh Kumar With Bharat Ratna Remark Amid Election Commission Row

Omar Abdullah Takes Dig At CEC Gyanesh Kumar

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday took a sarcastic dig at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid an ongoing political controversy over the Election Commission of India’s handling of electoral-roll revisions. Responding to a suggestion that Kumar should be awarded the Padma Bhushan, Abdullah said the poll chief should instead be given the Bharat Ratna and even made President of India. His remarks came amid criticism from opposition parties over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and reports of differences among election commissioners.

Abdullah was speaking to reporters in Srinagar when he questioned the functioning of the Election Commission. He said the ECI should undertake “some soul-searching” and argued that the concerns surrounding the poll body were not simply the result of opposition parties criticising it. Abdullah referred to a report alleging that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on multiple occasions over decisions related to the SIR exercise. The report said the objections concerned orders and decisions that the two commissioners allegedly said were issued without their knowledge or recommendation.

When asked about the demand for a Padma Bhushan for Kumar, Abdullah responded sarcastically by saying, “Why stop at Padma Bhushan? Give him the Bharat Ratna.” He further suggested that Kumar could be made President after completing his tenure as chief election commissioner. Abdullah also alleged that Kumar had done “so much for the BJP” and claimed that West Bengal had been “gifted” to the party. These statements were made by Abdullah as political criticism and represent his assessment of the CEC’s role; they are not an established finding that the Election Commission acted in favour of any political party.

The remarks followed comments from BJP West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya, who had recently said Kumar deserved the Padma Bhushan. Bhattacharya credited the CEC with overseeing what he described as a violence-free West Bengal Assembly election and with efforts to remove allegedly illegal voters from the electoral rolls. His comments came as opposition parties were questioning the Election Commission over the SIR process and reports of internal disagreements. The Padma Bhushan is India's third-highest civilian award, while the Bharat Ratna is the country's highest civilian honour.

The controversy centres in part on the SIR process, under which electoral rolls are being reviewed and updated. Reuters reported that Kumar has faced pressure from opposition parties following allegations of irregularities in voter-roll revision, while the Election Commission has rejected allegations of manipulation. Reuters also reported that the poll body has maintained that disagreements within an institution can occur during decision-making. The claims surrounding the electoral-roll process remain politically contested, with different parties offering sharply different accounts of the ECI’s conduct.

Abdullah said the Election Commission should address the allegations rather than attempt to conceal or dismiss the controversy. His comments add to the political debate surrounding the poll panel at a time when its handling of electoral-roll revisions is under scrutiny. The ECI’s decisions and the reported objections by individual commissioners have become a point of contention between the ruling party and opposition groups, with the dispute continuing over how the SIR exercise has been conducted and the implications for electoral rolls.
