Ohio Hindu Temple Attacked With Bricks; Windows Shatter During Devotees’ Presence
Bricks Damage Ohio Hindu Temple Windows
A Hindu temple in Ohio was allegedly attacked with bricks on October 2, shattering windows and damaging the building while priests and devotees were reportedly inside the premises. The incident took place at the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu Mandir in Richmond Heights, in the Greater Cleveland area, at around 1:30 pm. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) said surveillance footage from the temple was available and was being reviewed by authorities. The organisation said it had contacted temple leaders and was offering assistance following the incident.
In a post on X, the HAF said the temple had been targeted by one or more perpetrators and that the FBI and its Civil Rights Division were being alerted. The organisation urged law enforcement agencies to prioritise identifying and apprehending those responsible. It also called on elected officials and government agencies to publicly condemn what it described as a possible hate crime and address concerns about hostility directed at Hindu and Indian American communities. The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the identity and motive of the person or people involved, were not immediately established.
The Coalition of Hindus of North America also condemned the incident, describing it as an act of “Hinduphobia”. According to the coalition, bricks were used to vandalise the temple and break its windows while priests and devotees were inside. The organisation called for authorities to take prompt action and urged Richmond Heights Mayor Kim Thomas and municipal officials to publicly condemn the incident. The coalition’s account also highlighted the timing of the attack as Hindu communities in Ohio prepare for Hindu Heritage Month and the upcoming Navratri celebrations.

The Hindu American Foundation said the incident occurred on October 2, which coincided with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. It also noted that the attack came at the beginning of Hindu Heritage Month in Ohio. The organisation said the timing added significance to the incident, while urging authorities to investigate it thoroughly. However, there was no immediate confirmation that the attack was motivated by religious hatred, and the designation of the incident as a hate crime would depend on the findings of the investigation.
The attack has prompted concern among Hindu community organisations in the United States, particularly because people were reportedly present inside the temple when the windows were shattered. The HAF said it was in contact with temple leadership and would provide assistance, while the Coalition of Hindus of North America urged authorities to ensure accountability. Surveillance footage is expected to form part of the investigation as authorities work to establish how the attack occurred and identify those responsible.
Local authorities and law enforcement are expected to examine the available surveillance footage and other evidence as the investigation continues. The incident has also renewed calls from Hindu American organisations for public condemnation of attacks targeting religious institutions and communities. At present, the available accounts establish that the temple suffered damage after bricks were thrown at it, but further details about the perpetrators, their motive and possible charges remain subject to the ongoing investigation.
