Officer Praised By PM Modi Appointed To Top Police Post In Major Kerala Reshuffle
Senior police reshuffle brings key appointment in Kerala.
The Kerala government has carried out a major reshuffle of the state police force, transferring 30 senior IPS officers across key positions ranging from Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) ranks to district police chiefs. The extensive overhaul comes just days after a significant reshuffle in the state's administrative bureaucracy and ahead of an ambitious police modernisation initiative proposed by Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala.
Among the most notable appointments is that of IPS officer P Vijayan, who has been named the new Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), one of the most influential positions in Kerala's policing structure. The role places him at the forefront of maintaining public order and overseeing law enforcement operations across the state.
A 1999-batch IPS officer, Vijayan has had a varied career within the Kerala Police. He had previously faced suspension during the tenure of an earlier Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. However, the suspension was subsequently revoked, allowing him to return to service and continue his rise through the ranks of the police force.

Vijayan gained national recognition for his initiatives related to the annual Sabarimala pilgrimage. His efforts to promote responsible and environmentally conscious pilgrimage practices drew praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who highlighted the campaign during an episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat. The recognition helped bring wider attention to the officer's work beyond Kerala.
The latest reshuffle is viewed as part of a broader effort to strengthen policing and administrative efficiency across the state. By repositioning senior officers in strategic roles, the government aims to improve coordination, enhance operational effectiveness and prepare the force for upcoming reforms and challenges.
Officials have indicated that the changes are intended to support a comprehensive transformation of Kerala Police, with a focus on modernization, technology integration and improved public service delivery. The appointments are expected to take effect immediately, with senior officers assuming their new responsibilities in the coming days.
