Obama Slams Trump's "Treason" Claim as Outrageous Distraction

Former President Obama denounces Trump's baseless 2016 election accusations.

Former President Barack Obama has sharply criticized Donald Trump's recent accusations of "treason" against him, labeling them "outrageous" and a "weak attempt at distraction." Trump's claims stem from a controversial report by US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, which alleged that Obama administration officials manipulated intelligence on Russian interference in the 2016 election.

In a rare response, Obama’s spokesman, Patrick Rodenbush, stated, "Out of respect for the presidency, we typically avoid addressing the constant misinformation from this White House. However, these claims are so ridiculous they demand a response." He emphasized that Gabbard's report does not undermine the established conclusion—supported by a 2020 bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio—that Russia sought to influence the 2016 election but did not alter votes.

The Senate report, chaired by Rubio, now Trump’s secretary of state, revealed that the Trump campaign aimed to "maximize the impact" of Democratic documents hacked by Russian military intelligence to benefit Trump and harm Hillary Clinton. It described Russia’s actions and the Trump campaign’s involvement as a significant threat to US national security.

Gabbard’s report, widely criticized for contradicting findings from four separate probes between 2019 and 2023, claimed Obama’s team fabricated intelligence to orchestrate a "years-long coup" against Trump. These probes consistently confirmed Russia’s intervention to aid Trump in 2016.

During a press event with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Trump pointed to Obama as the "leader of the gang," also naming Joe Biden, James Comey, James Clapper, and John Brennan as conspirators. Trump, who recently shared an AI-generated video depicting Obama’s arrest, has long dismissed investigations into Russian interference as a "hoax."

Rodenbush’s statement accused Trump of using these allegations to divert attention from his administration’s failure to release files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case, underscoring the ongoing political tensions surrounding Trump’s claims.
