Greenland’s PM Slaps Down Trump: ‘We’re Not Yours to Take’
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen delivered a defiant rebuke Sunday to U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that America will seize control of the resource-laden Arctic island.
In a fiery Facebook post, Nielsen declared, “The United States will not get it. We do not belong to anyone else. We decide our own future,” stamping out Trump’s annexation drumbeat with a fierce assertion of sovereignty.
The pushback follows Trump’s Saturday NBC News interview, where he doubled down on his fixation with Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory and NATO ally. Calling it vital for “world peace” and “international security,” Trump mused about acquisition without ruling out military force.
“I think there’s a good possibility we could do it without military force,” he said, before adding, “I don’t take anything off the table.” His cavalier “I don’t care” retort to how Russia’s Vladimir Putin—who’s annexed Ukrainian lands—might read this only fanned the flames.
Greenland’s 57,000 residents and leaders, alongside Danish officials, have bristled at Trump’s relentless overtures.
Nielsen’s stand echoes a united front against U.S. designs on the island, prized for its rare earth minerals and strategic perch. As Trump toys with force, Greenland digs in—its fate, they insist, isn’t his to dictate.
