Northern Japan Hit By 80 Cm Tsunami After 7.4 Magnitude Quake

Tsunami wave hits Japan after 7.4 magnitude earthquake

A tsunami wave measuring around 80 centimetres struck parts of northern Japan following a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake that shook the region, according to early reports from authorities monitoring seismic activity and coastal conditions.

The earthquake, which occurred offshore, triggered immediate tsunami warnings along sections of the northern coastline. Residents in affected areas were urged to move to higher ground as precautionary measures, while emergency systems were activated to assess potential damage from both the quake and resulting sea waves.

Officials confirmed that an 80 cm tsunami wave was recorded in certain coastal locations shortly after the seismic event. While relatively moderate in height, such waves can still pose risks in low-lying coastal zones, particularly where infrastructure or natural barriers are limited.

Emergency response teams and local authorities began inspections to evaluate any structural damage, disruptions, or injuries caused by the earthquake. Transport and coastal monitoring systems were placed on alert as aftershocks remained a concern in the hours following the initial tremor.

Japan is highly prone to earthquakes due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active zone. Authorities routinely maintain early warning systems and evacuation protocols to reduce risk during such events, and further assessments are expected as monitoring continues.
