Northeast Frontier Railway Breaks Own Record: 1,033 Metres of Track Renewed in One Day

Northeast Frontier Railway's Alipurduar Division sets record with 1,033 metres of mechanised track renewal in a single day.

The Alipurduar Division of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved a major milestone in railway infrastructure development by recording its highest-ever single-day mechanised track renewal output. Using Plasser’s Quick Relaying System (PQRS), the division successfully renewed 1,033 metres of track in a single day on December 23, officials said.

According to NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the achievement reflects efficient deployment of high-output mechanised technology, optimised traffic block planning, and seamless coordination between engineering and operating departments. The record underscores NFR’s focus on modernising rail infrastructure while minimising disruptions to train services.

During the ongoing track renewal programme, NFR has undertaken a total of 290.8 kilometres of track renewal across its network. Significant progress has been recorded across divisions, including Katihar, Alipurduar, Rangiya, Lumding, and Tinsukia, highlighting a systematic approach to upgrading rail assets across the zone.

The Plasser’s Quick Relaying System is a compact, self-propelled crane-based technology widely used for both new track construction and modernisation of existing lines. Its deployment allows faster replacement of rail panels, enabling longer track sections to be renewed within shorter traffic blocks and at reduced maintenance costs.

Officials noted that PQRS also facilitates the direct retrieval of old rail panels from the work site to the base depot, eliminating the need for additional freight movement. This not only improves efficiency but also reduces logistical complexity during renewal operations.

The successful execution of this high-output track renewal operation demonstrates NFR’s continued emphasis on safety, reliability, and operational efficiency. Headquartered in Maligaon, Guwahati, the Northeast Frontier Railway serves all Northeastern states, along with parts of West Bengal and north Bihar, playing a vital role in regional connectivity and development.
