Normalcy Returns As Nepal Army Takes Charge Of Security

The army takes the nationwide security lead after protests and Oli's resignation.

Nepal's Nepali Army took charge of nationwide security operations early Wednesday, deploying troops across Kathmandu and other cities to enforce restrictions and restore order following widespread anti-government protests that led to Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli's resignation. The army assumed command at 10 pm on Tuesday amid ongoing unrest, with forces patrolling key areas to prevent further violence. This move comes after protesters stormed government buildings, resulting in significant damage and at least 19 deaths during clashes with police, prompting authorities to impose curfews and advisories for residents to stay indoors unless necessary.

In response to the chaos, the army expressed concerns about groups exploiting the situation for looting and vandalism, deploying personnel to safeguard public property and citizens. Restrictions were enforced in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur, leading to deserted streets and limited movement, with only essential services operational. Fire trucks were actively responding to fires in government offices, the Parliament, the President's residence, and other sites targeted by agitators on Tuesday, while security patrols maintained a heavy presence to deter additional incidents.

The protests, driven by the youth-led "Gen Z" movement against alleged corruption and a now-lifted government ban on social media, escalated into violence that forced Oli to resign shortly after demonstrators breached his office. The ban was revoked late Monday, but not before the unrest claimed lives and caused extensive destruction, including arson at political party offices and homes of senior leaders. The government's decision to hand security to the army reflects efforts to contain the fallout and stabilise the nation.

As normalcy gradually returns, authorities continue to monitor the situation, with the army's intervention aimed at preventing further escalation.
