NIA Intensifies Crackdown With Chargesheet Against 11 Alleged Bangladeshi Terrorists

NIA chargesheets 11 accused in alleged terror conspiracy.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against 11 accused in connection with an alleged terror conspiracy linked to Imam Mahmuder Kafila (IMK), a branch of the banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) terrorist organisation. The chargesheet was submitted before the NIA Special Court in Guwahati under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. According to the agency, the accused were allegedly involved in efforts to spread the outfit's extremist ideology and expand its network across parts of eastern and northeastern India.

The NIA said its investigation found that the conspiracy was aimed at promoting the banned organisation's extremist agenda, radicalising vulnerable youth and strengthening its presence in India. The agency alleged that IMK functioned as a branch of JMB and sought to expand its activities in West Bengal as well as the northeastern states, including Assam and Tripura. Investigators claimed the organisation attempted to recruit supporters and propagate anti-India ideology through covert operations.

According to the NIA, senior JMB member Imam Mahmud Habibullah established Imam Mahmuder Kafila to further the banned organisation's objectives on Indian soil. The agency alleged that the 11 accused actively participated in the conspiracy by organising clandestine meetings, conducting religious indoctrination programmes, circulating extremist literature and using digital platforms to spread propaganda. Investigators said these activities were aimed at expanding the outfit's influence and facilitating recruitment.

The chargesheet identifies Nasimuddin and Jagir Mia as two of the key accused in the case. According to the NIA, Nasimuddin allegedly headed IMK's operations in Assam, while Jagir Mia was responsible for leading the organisation's activities in Tripura. The agency claims both played significant roles in coordinating the group's activities and strengthening its operational network in the region.

During the investigation, the NIA said it recovered a range of incriminating materials, including documents, electronic devices and digital records, which it cited as evidence supporting the charges against the accused. The agency stated that forensic examination of the seized material helped establish the alleged links between the accused and the banned terrorist organisation, as well as their involvement in the purported conspiracy.

The filing of the chargesheet marks the next stage in the legal proceedings, with the case now set to be examined by the NIA Special Court in Guwahati. The accused will face trial under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The allegations made by the NIA will be subject to judicial scrutiny during the course of the trial, and the accused are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
