Neymar Substituted In Error During Santos’ 3-0 Defeat Against Coritiba
Neymar was mistakenly substituted due to referee error during Santos’ 3-0 loss to Coritiba.
Brazilian football star Neymar Jr. was left frustrated after a bizarre officiating error during Santos’ 3–0 home defeat to Coritiba in a Brazilian league match on Sunday, in an incident that briefly overshadowed the on-field action. The match came at a crucial time for the forward, who is still working his way back to full fitness ahead of Brazil’s upcoming World Cup squad announcement.
The incident occurred in the 65th minute when Santos were already trailing 3–0. Neymar, who had been receiving medical treatment for his right calf on the pitch, was instructed by the referee to move to the sidelines while treatment continued. Moments later, confusion emerged when the fourth official displayed the substitution board indicating that Neymar, wearing the No. 10 jersey, was being replaced by Robinho Jr., who immediately entered the field.
However, both Neymar and Santos coach Cuca later insisted that the intended substitution was for defender Gonzalo Escobar, who wears No. 31. The mix-up led to Neymar being incorrectly taken off, prompting confusion on the sidelines and an immediate clarification attempt by the player and coaching staff.

Visibly angered, Neymar confronted the officials, arguing that a procedural mistake had been made. Referee Paulo Cesar Zanovelli responded by issuing the forward a yellow card for dissent after he resisted the substitution decision. Neymar later demonstrated the official substitution sheet to broadcasters, highlighting that Escobar’s number had originally been listed for the change.
Following the match, coach Cuca acknowledged that an error had occurred on the officials’ part but emphasized that it was not responsible for Santos’ defeat. The Brazilian football confederation, which oversees the domestic league, has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident, which has since sparked debate among fans and analysts over officiating standards in the competition.
