New York Fed Report Shows Rising US Hunger Levels After Covid Era
New York Fed report shows US hunger worsening beyond Covid-era levels.
A new survey released by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York has found that food insecurity in the United States has worsened significantly this year, with more households reporting hunger-related hardships than during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. The findings highlight growing financial strain among American families despite overall economic expansion.
The survey, conducted in February among approximately 1,200 US household heads, examined whether respondents had to rely on savings or emergency funds to meet expenses, struggled to access sufficient food, experienced children missing meals, or received food assistance through donations or government programmes. The New York Fed said there were “meaningful increases” across all four indicators of hardship compared to previous years.
According to the report, more than one-third of households said they had dipped into savings to cover basic expenses, a sharp increase from 21.8 percent recorded in June 2020 during the pandemic period. The data suggests that financial pressure has become more widespread, particularly among lower-income and lower-educated households.

The survey also found that around 10 percent of households reported not having enough food or having children who missed meals, compared to about 4 percent in June 2020. In addition, more than 15 percent of respondents said they had received food donations, up from 10.6 percent during the same earlier period, indicating increased reliance on food assistance systems.
The New York Fed noted that the deterioration in food security has been accompanied by declining consumer confidence. It said sentiment levels have fallen close to or below those seen during the Great Recession and the Covid-19 pandemic, reflecting heightened financial anxiety among households.
While the broader US economy continues to show signs of growth, the report emphasised a widening gap between macroeconomic indicators and household-level experiences. It noted that many families remain under sustained financial pressure, with rising costs contributing to pessimism about personal financial stability and future economic conditions.
