New Oscars Rules Set to Disrupt India’s Traditional Academy Awards Selection

New Academy rules could allow festival-winning Indian films to qualify directly for Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has introduced new rules for the 2027 Oscars that could significantly alter how countries such as India compete in the Best International Feature Film category. The revised framework expands eligibility for films that win top honours at major international festivals, potentially reducing the importance of the long-standing system where each country submits a single official entry through a national committee.

Under the updated rules, films receiving major awards at globally recognised festivals, including Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Toronto, Busan, and Sundance, may become eligible for Oscar consideration independently. This means acclaimed films may no longer need to rely entirely on selection by their home country’s official body. For India, the change could prove highly significant, as the nation’s Oscar submission process has often faced criticism and controversy.

The Film Federation of India (FFI), which selects India’s official entry each year, has frequently come under scrutiny over its choices. Filmmakers and critics have questioned whether commercially popular films are sometimes favoured over internationally celebrated artistic works. Under the new system, a film such as Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light, if it secured a qualifying festival honour, might have had a pathway to Oscar consideration even without being India’s official submission.

The Academy’s broader rule changes also reaffirm the importance of human creative authorship while not banning the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. For India, however, the most immediate impact may be the possibility of multiple avenues to the Oscars rather than dependence on a single domestic selection. If implemented fully, the changes could give internationally recognised Indian cinema a stronger and more direct route to global awards recognition.
