Netanyahu Coalition Moves To Dissolve Parliament, Bringing Israel Closer To Fresh Elections

Netanyahu coalition pushes parliament dissolution bill, raising fresh election possibility.

The coalition led by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday submitted a bill to dissolve parliament, taking the first formal step toward triggering fresh national elections later this year. The move could pave the way for an early vote as political pressure mounts within the governing alliance and public opinion remains divided over the coalition’s performance during a turbulent term.

The proposal is expected to be followed by a preliminary parliamentary vote next week, according to Israeli media reports. If approved, the bill would begin the formal process of dissolving the Knesset and setting a date for new elections. Under the proposal, elections would be held “no less than 90 days” after the legislation passes, giving Netanyahu flexibility in choosing the timing of the vote.

Netanyahu’s coalition is nearing the end of its four-year mandate and is constitutionally required to hold elections by the end of October. However, several ultra-Orthodox parties within the governing bloc have reportedly pushed for an earlier election in September, believing it could improve their political positioning amid shifting public sentiment and coalition tensions.

The current coalition, made up largely of religious and nationalist parties, has overseen one of the most difficult periods in recent Israeli history. Its term included the October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas and the subsequent conflicts involving Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. The wars and their domestic impact have significantly shaped public debate around security, governance, and national leadership.

Opinion polls in recent months have suggested the ruling coalition could face a difficult path to reelection. Critics have accused the government of mishandling key security and political challenges, while supporters argue the administration has maintained a firm stance during a period of regional instability and conflict.

The move toward possible early elections adds fresh uncertainty to Israel’s political landscape, which has experienced repeated cycles of coalition instability and snap polls over the past several years. Analysts expect coalition negotiations, security issues, and economic concerns to dominate the campaign if parliament is formally dissolved in the coming weeks.
