Nepal Foreign Minister Visits China As Beijing Reaffirms Support For Bilateral Ties

China reiterates support during Nepal minister's high-level visit.

Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Monday during his first official visit to China since his party secured a decisive election victory in March. The visit comes just days after Khanal travelled to India, highlighting Nepal’s efforts to maintain balanced relations with its two powerful neighbours amid shifting regional dynamics.

The meeting is being closely watched as China seeks to strengthen ties with countries in its neighbourhood while navigating geopolitical competition in Asia. Nepal occupies a strategically important position between China and India, making its diplomatic engagement with both nations a matter of considerable interest for regional policymakers and analysts.

According to a statement released by China’s Foreign Ministry, Wang Yi reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to its relationship with Kathmandu and described Nepal as a priority in China’s neighbourhood diplomacy. “China has always placed Nepal at the forefront of its neighbourhood diplomacy,” Wang said, adding that Beijing would continue to support Nepal in safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The visit comes at a sensitive political moment following changes in Nepal’s domestic political landscape. Analysts note that the earlier removal of a Communist Party-led coalition government in Kathmandu has created new challenges for Chinese diplomacy in South Asia. Beijing has been working to deepen political and economic ties with neighbouring countries even as it faces strategic competition with India and broader regional tensions in the East and South China Seas.

Observers say Nepal’s long-standing political, cultural and economic links with India provide Kathmandu with significant diplomatic leverage. As a result, China is increasingly required to demonstrate the benefits of closer engagement through infrastructure investment, economic cooperation and development initiatives. Nepal has been a participant in several Chinese-backed projects in recent years, including those linked to regional connectivity and infrastructure development.

For Nepal, maintaining strong relations with both Beijing and New Delhi remains a key element of its foreign policy. With a population of around 30 million and a strategic location in the Himalayas, the country has traditionally sought to balance its ties with the two Asian powers while protecting its national interests. Khanal’s visits to both India and China within a short span underscore Kathmandu’s continued pursuit of a balanced diplomatic approach amid evolving regional and geopolitical realities.
